Outward Bound.

I AM BACK FROM OBS! :D Hahahaha it was a tiring yet wonderful experience, with many precious memories and values we can bring home(: Hm... somehow my computer skills have deteriorated -.- And I think the computer collapsed because right now I'm using the old version of the Internet T.T I don't like it!!! Screen resolution is weird...
Well, OBS was definitely different. It opens your eyes, your mind, your soul to the different aspects of life. All that pain, suffering, tears, bites, cuts, marks, bruises, etc were worth it in the end. It wasn't so bad, because after every activity, our efforts always came with a prize: a sense of satisfaction and in-built confidence for the future(; I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really do miss OBS right now. I miss Shackleton, our overly-enthusiastic yet overly-slow group; I miss Muru, our wonderful, caring and funny instructor; I miss Camp 2, the lovely home camp site with our stores and with the cleanest toilets, where most of our memories are; I miss the trekking, the kayaking, the climbing, and the pain, the sweat, the dirt, the mud.
OBS has come with many rewards. Not posessions, but values and morals we can use to apply to our lives. It has been a refreshing breath of air amidst the drowning in our hectic lives. Well, I'm black now, and I have bruises on my shoulders and back from carrying a bagpack which was over 10kg. But all these was definitely worth it.(:

First day of OBS! Was dreading it I guess... Went to school and it was really messy because I was LATE -.- But all became well in the end(: Teachers fetched us in buses to Punggol Jetty, where after a while they left! D: I think I completely forgot about them after a while XD All the instructors gave me a pretty good impression! Haha they were so friendly and really enthusiastic and also very funny. After a long introduction we went for a group introduction :D Muru introduced himself to us... We took a group photo! ;D After settling some admin stuff, we went to Pulau Ubin! :O Camp 2 was the first part of OBS we saw. It was quite homely to me, because I expected it to be more disgusting XD Started with all the admin stuff, followed by introducing the store with all the equipment.
First major activity was KAYAKING! :D Well I expected us to be really going for the sea expedition ._. I mean what do I know it was the first day there! But we went kayaking just for safety briefings and tryouts. Life vests, kayaks, paddles... Floating in the saltwater was really fun! Muru wanted us to completely submerge our heads inside, and the water was NASTY. Really salty. Heard from Muru later that many previous batches who came for OBS all did their business inside the sea, and that's why it's salty :\ EWW! Capsizing tryouts next! I was scared at first, especially after seeing Muru and Rachel capsizing :O But I thought: 'Hey, it's OBS! Step up and just do everything they ask you to!' So I think Rachel and I were one of the first to go and try capsizing :D After capsizing, I realised it wasn't really scary. Actually it was kind of fun!(: Going out into deeper, open seawater later to capsize and do the rescue was scarier, but fears were overcome! :D Now I like capsizing XD
Pitching an A-tent for the first time in my life was kind of fun I guess... Helped others to pitch the tents, but ended up reserving the tent that Muru pitched for ourselves XD HAHA we do not trust in our own pitching skills! :X Sleeping in the tent was also quite a... interesting expereicne? Hehe. But it was really HOT and STUFFY. So didn't use my sleeping bag at all, just like some told me -.- Used it as a pillow though, so it was okay(: Slept with Heyao, Zen and Weiping :D Yay the awesome four! x3 No bites the first day! :D
090310
Second day of OBS! Woke up thinking that, 'hey, OBS isn't so bad at all!' but I probably said that too soon :\ Trekking! :O We had to pack everything we needed to bring for the next 3 days in individual backpacks. The load wasn't heavy, until we put in our ponchos, tents, etc. It easily weighed more than 10kg per bag o.o When we carried them on our backs, we started slouching from the weight, and we bent our backs to reduce the weight on our shoulders, and began to look like turtles! XD Don't know how he managed to, but Muru was standing straight the whole torturous 7 and a half hours O.O
The first part of trekking was not so bad. Somehow I ended up as the navigator :X So we trekked till the checkpoint at this five-track junction. I was rather surprised that I could navigate us so far XD Don't trust in my sense of direction... After the checkpoint the weight of the backpacks really started pulling us down. A lot of us started complaining about how heavy it was, how we were not going to make it, that we were going to die soon... Now that I look back, all of us were looking at the negative side of things. None of us were looking at the positive side: the crunch sounds of our feet on grass and rocks, the birds and insects singing in the trees, nature going through its process... Instead we were all just thinking about when we could have a break, how to make our backpacks lighter, and so on. Well I learnt that in life, many things have their positive and negative sides. It only depends if you see the cup as half empty or half full.(:
After about 3 hours of trekking, we finally made it to Ubin Village! :D Which was at the other end of Pulau Ubin from Camp 2 O.O So that really gave us a sense of satisfaction(; Took a break to have lunch and rest, which was definitely well-deserved I think(: Felt really tired and sleepy, and there were actually some people who slept at the exhibition corner where we were sitting XD After 45 minutes, which obviously was not long enough a time to rest, we started trekking back past camp 2 to camp 1 -.= I mean, seriously! Why must we go one big round, if we could just take that short distance from Camp 2 to Camp 1! :O
I can say that everyone really tried their best to keep their spirits up.(: But I guess everyone was just so exhausted that we couldn't keep our spirits up for long ): After a while we again started to complain and look down to the floor while having internal stress... But in the end, we made it to Camp 1! Hahaha everyone felt so happy when camp 1 came into sight! :D Everyone started cheering and screaming and singing songs like the school song XD Camp 1 seemed like heaven to us :D
Ate a well-deserved cooked dinner at the food court in Camp 1 ;D Took a bath which was horrible because the toilets in Camp 1 were in really bad condition -.- Set up our tents in this really really high place which was really uphill. The hills were so steep! :O Like more than 45 degrees steep. :\
Had a briefing for the sea expedition the next day, where 8 of us got nominated to be the sea-ex leaders; Rachel and I were two of them O.O WHY DO YOU TRUST US SO MUCH SHACKLETON! Or rather, why do you trust me so much =.= I HAVE BAD DIRECTIONAL SKILLS! But anyway, somehow Rachel and I became the navigators when the leaders were discussing the program for the next day... -.- Weimin and Alina were the starboard sweepers, Qianyi and her friend were the back sweepers (at the back) and another pair were the port sweepers(: The whole day was planned by us, including the timings, the route, and so on. It was rather fun to be planning for that, I must say(: Briefed Camp 2 Delta (consiting of 4 watches) again before we went to sleep in our tents which were really uphill -.-
100310
It started raining in the middle of the night while we were sleeping :O At around 4am, water started splashing onto the tents, and water started dripping in :\ The whole tent was sinking in and gradually collapsing! All of us woke up from that realisation and tried to keep the tent up while falling asleep on the wet wet floor D: Instructors came to save us! Asked us to go down to get shelter because it was raining really heavily. So we had to go down that steep hill in the dark while it was muddy and wet :O It was kinda scary because we didn't know where we were going, only following the glowsticks as we went along... All of us got really wet because we had no shelter whatsoever -.-
Sea expedition was delayed because it rained again after a while. We couldn't go because of the lightning alert... So after dragging till 11+ we were finally cleared to go! :D Rachel and I went out first, which was kinda scary because there was no one else paddling in kayaks to rescue us if we capsized XD But after a while we got used to it... Launching was really slow, because not all could come out at once. After dragging for a long time again, we finally could start moving!
Being navigator is tough, because every literally follows you wherever you go. And you have to make sure that you stay right in front with no one else in front of you. Which means that a lot of strength is required. WHO SAID YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ABLE TO KAYAK TO BE A SEA-EX LEADER??! We kept going left and right, zig-zagging around the open sea -.- So everyone was really following us and also going left and right 8D We probably went twice the distance we were supposed to go XD I guess it was pretty fun to bring everyone around though, even though we were the ones going off-track all the time -.-
Kayaking for 5 hours straight in open water was a good experience. I didn't fall seasick! :D After staying in the water for so long, I just got used to us drifting with the waves, and came to love it altogether! We were against the current and the wind for most part of the expedition, but we made it to the new campsite nonetheless!(: It was encouraging to see everyone trying their best to paddle and paddle when we could not stop paddling because the current would make us drift back(; We came out stiff and worn out and sunburnt, but we didn't complain because it was worth it. :D
The third campsite was the worst, because there were absolutely no toilets AT ALL. No buildings, even. Just complete wilderness with a lot of insects and grass and weird plants and rocks. Setting up tents was really hard because we had to use rocks instead of tent pegs to sustain the tents, as tent pegs would come out easily from the rock ground. Got really annoyed at pretty much anything and everything, because of the amount of frustration there was held within the pitching of tents, and the environment. This is what is meant by 'your true self will appear' I guess... I tried not to throw any tantrums though o.o
110310
Fourth day! All of Shackleton overslept =.= We were far too tired already hahahaha. Muru was so understanding(: He didn't scold us when he saw that we were still sleeping at 6.30 when we were supposed to be ready by then. :D Thankyou Muru!!!! :D:D We were actually quite shocked ourselves when we realised it was already 6.30 in the morning. Liangxuan didnt wake up herself! XD
We trekked back to Camp 2! :D Can't believe how much I actually missed Camp 2... When we saw it we went 'OMG CAMP 2!!! IT'S LIKE WE REACHED HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!' Hahahaha. (: Camp 2 really seemed like home then, because that was where our beloved store, blocks, shelters and toilets were 8D We had a lot more fun while trekking also! :D Great to see that everyone stuck together, and were singing and laughing together, making lame jokes with each other(: Got rid of the backpacks (finally!) back at camp 2, and we proceeded with high elements!
During the belaying training, I was asked to be the first one to climb T.T Somehow Muru trusts me alot...? Hahaha I don't know, but it was a privilege to climb up with Muru belaying me XD It was fun(: All of us got used to the sun already thanks to trekking -.- Rachel was so funny because of her badly sunburnt hands XD Whenever I brushed her hand just a little bit she went 'OW!' so loudly HAHAHA. And her sunburn is really funny because there is a distinct watch mark there XD
Well I have nothing much to comment about the high elements, because I couldn't climb to the top T.T I am too weak =.= It was really nice to see everyone trying their best(: And Xueyi is so funny because when she reached the top she started screaming because she's afraid of heights HAHAHA.
Last night together... ): After the fourth day, I really started to miss all our activites, and I really started to treasure our watch... I think Shackleton is the really enthusiastic yet really slow group :D It's unique altogether! I love our group! It's so united and we all accept each other.(: SHACKLETON PWNS! :) Our tents were pitched really nicely that night, because it was our last night and everyone wanted to make it count(; So we slept really well that night! There was a stick insect in one of the tents, which is pretty cool and the insect is rather CUTE! :D Hahaha first time I said an insect is cute, probably because it really was absolutely harmless and Muru was holding it in his hand XD
120310
Last day of OBS ): Woke up feeling rather sad because it was the last day!!!!! Can't believe I was sad after all that torturous activities, but I really miss OBS now... We unpitched our tents for the last time that day.
Started packing the store and packing our bags. Took a really really long time surprisingly o.o We lost our blue tarp :O Seriously, it's so fat and so big HOW ON EARTH DID WE LOSE IT?!? Hahaha it cost quite a lot... $34 I think :\ Some other group might have taken it...
Our last activity at Pulau Ubin was this trust activity. We were supposed to say our goal in life after OBS, how we can apply what we learnt from OBS into our own lives, and leap forwards towards this bell which is hung high up, taking the bell as our goals in life. Everyone tried their best to touch it! AND I WAS THE FIRST TO SUCCEED hahahaha(: Encouragement from Muru, who said, 'You must reach the bell okay Hilary?' Thanks for the encouragement from everyone else as well, who said that I can do it and asked me to jiayou! and push on and that I will make it! :D Hahaha so I did! :D:D:D I'm so happy(: Weiping was the second and the last one to touch it! :D YAY I'm glad I was able to put my everything into this last activity(; Thankyou Shackleton!
Shackleton was the last one to leave Pulau Ubin!! And Rachel and I and Heyao and Shenchun were the absolute last ones to leave XD Hahaha love OBS! (:
I missed out alot of smaller details... Like how Rachel discovered she is capable of swearing alot.. And how we kept reversing words accidentally like 'tenting the pitch' and 'sand hanitizer'. XD All these little details count, and it's what make the memories memorable(: I really miss OBS now. OBS is different. OBS is an eye-opener. I have learnt so many things about myself there. I realised that I'm not really weak, just really stubborn sometimes. Overcoming limits may be difficult, but it isn't impossible. You don't know what you're capable of. So don't underestimate yourself. Just do it, you don't know what you can get.
Thankyou Shackleton, for being so awesome for me :D I think I'm blessed to have you as my watch(: I didn't know many of you, but we managed to get to know each other better through OBS, and I will treasure our friendships! ;D Thankyou Heyao, Weiping and Zen for being my awesome tent-mates :D It was awesome sleeping, pitching tents and pushing the collapsing tent up with you! :D Thankyou Rachel, for being my awesome kayak partner, capsizing and paddling with me all the way! Will miss kayaking with you! :D Thankyou Muru, for always caring for us, for being so kind and reasonable to us(:
